Wooden Floor Staining, Colouring And Whitewashing
If you're looking to refresh your timber floors in Newcastle (and surrounds) with a finish beyond natural wood tones, staining and colouring options could be the perfect solution. Techniques like staining and whitewashing have long been used in the flooring industry and are now more popular than ever, becoming a frequent request in our services. They provide an amazing way of completely changing the feel of a room.
Amazing Choice Of Colours
There is an incredible variety of stains available on the market, but your options will be based on what flooring you currently have. Hardwood and Softwood react very differently to staining as well as the type of hard or soft wood you have.
Some stains are designed to give natural-looking results while others are completely artificial like white-washing, greens, reds, yellows and almost blacks etc. At AFS we can show you the range of colours for your existing floor and help you choose the right one.
Know Your Flooring – Hard v Soft
Hardwoods like oak and walnut absorb stain evenly, enhancing the natural grain. Softwoods like pine and fir, however, can absorb stains unevenly, leading to blotchy results if not treated properly. Knowing your wood type ensures a smooth, flawless finish so just get in touch and we can advise.
Things To Consider When Choosing A Colour
Much like painting your walls, your colour choice will have many knock-on effects. Drastically changing the colour is quite a big decision so requires some careful thought. The most common things to consider are:
- Dark Colours – Darker stains will make a room look smaller but will hide more dirt
- Light Colours – Lighter stains will make a room look bigger but will hide less dirt
- Complementary? – Whether the colour is complementary to the rest of the rooms colours like walls and furniture etc
Don’t worry, using our vast 25-plus years of experience AFS will help guide you in choosing the right colour to stain your floors.

FAQs
How long does the floor sanding and polishing process take?
Time frames are dependent on the size and particulars of the job. However, for reference a typical 3-bedroom home can be completed in 3 to 4 days. Upon inspection we can provide a more accurate timeframe.
Do I have to move out of the house while work is being done?
Our primary concern is the safety of occupants. In some circumstances it may not be appropriate to remain in the work environment due to exposure to noise, fine dust, and machinery, however, we will work with you to ensure we minimise any inconvenience.
How long after coating floors can I walk on them?
Our finishes allow for light foot traffic 24 hours after final coat. You can carefully lift and return your furniture 72 hours after the final coat is applied and we recommend fitting felt pieces to your furniture legs to protect your floor.
Will the coating have a strong smell?
All our coating products are water-based, which produce next to no odour and no lingering smell.
Do I need to remove my own furniture?
Yes. Removing furniture is the responsibility of the owner and should be done prior to the arrival of our professionals.
Do you have fixed pricing?
No. Each job and aims are unique so we quote according to the job so that you aren’t paying for anything you don’t need. Just give us a call for a free, no-obligation, accurate quote for your floor
